Al Harris-Fernandez’s goal is to create absorbing images that are ambiguous, unpredictable, able to surprise, and take on a life of their own. His methodology combines intuition and reflection and approaches the canvas from all directions, literally rotating the canvases as he works. It intrigues him to interpret formal qualities of mark making from a flat surface as a reference of three-dimensional space. Harris-Fernandez invites the unexpected but also spends much time analyzing, to determine what is allowed to remain and what gets adjusted in his work.
