Born in Davenport, IA, in 1944, Richard Kelley received his BA from the University of Iowa, in 1967, and an MFA in Painting from the University of Cincinnati, in 1969. He was the 1988 recipient of the Arts Midwest/National Endowment for the Arts Regional Visual Arts Fellowship program. Kelley is driven by and imbues his painting with what he calls, “a sense of passion, life connectedness and, above all, ‘Magic.'” The energy he works with is visible in his vibrant colors, strong lines, narrative compositions, and “concrete subject matter.” His goal is to visually lead the viewer somewhere unpredictable, but which, in the end, feels sensical.
