Artist Portfolios

Therese Murdza

Born in 1964 and raised in Edgewood, Maryland, I apply an early training in music, a later training in theatre performance, and an ongoing practice of writing to the canvas. I compose and materialize a project of sound from transitory space: painting images and concepts with basic elements like circles, lines, and color. I narrate the middles of things – not the beginnings or the ends, but middles; the being in the middle of things. I work almost exclusively on stretched canvas, in turns building large and small pieces, created in response to intuition and impulse as well as ongoing commission requests. I paint with acrylic and/or oil paint, using pencil, water-based crayon, charcoal, and ink to mark my place, leave a note, add line, relay the maps, and offer an ongoing substantive record. With gallery connections in North Carolina, Iowa, and Oregon, I am continually influenced by the geography of a vibrant and sometimes virtual community of artists and activists. Encouraged to stay curious about the world, to paint the unpredictable movements of bodies and words, the paragraphs and shapes and sounds set alight.   -Therese Mudza
