JOHN PHILLIP DAVIS

INTERVIEW WITH JIM DUNCAN

Artist Statement

My work is a reaction and is reactive. This perhaps is not an exotic explanation but a genuine one. For me it’s the texture and the immediate commonality or discord in material space and design that moves me forward. One of the great studio thrills is to use a material for the first time. Patterns in art are inevitable. The newness that comes with the potential loss of material and time brings forth the most primal result for me. This process keeps me in the classroom of my mind.
When creating work I use memory and gravity, tonal and atmospheric influences. Example, think of a time or a place, create a harmony or an obstacle in the studio, syncopate strokes with sounds around me, use smell, light, time limit and general formula to ignite a surface. I work in many layers with multiple interactions with the surface over extended periods of time. The piece tells me when its done. For me it is the ritual that rides above all that happens with a finished piece.
