Lindsay Burke was born and raised in Ames, Iowa. She recently attended the University of Iowa and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in painting. She has also received education from Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, New York and The International School of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture in Montecastello Di Vibio, Italy.
Lindsay began painting with an almost exclusive interest in representational and mostly figurative work. Over the course of the past year, however, the paintings have been shaped by a fascination with the landscape, both imagined and observed.
Captivated by the ways in which natural geological processes and artificial processes change the visual landscape, a search has begun to express a new and contemporary Midwest landscape. Using washes of gouache, collage, and sometimes oil she has been inspired by the similarities between the process of painting and the ways in which humans alter the natural landscape; both involve a continuous cycle of envisioning, constructing, editing, removing, adding and adjusting.
