Artist Portfolios Bev Gegen I paint abstract pictures that are about things that are real to me. Just about anything that enters my consciousness, from Indy cars to Daylilies can become the subject matter of my art. States of mind, peace, quiet, joy, solitude, etc., as well as specific places I have known-all serve as grist for my imagination. My techniques vary. I build the surfaces of my painting in a very physical way using acrylic washes and opaque layers, while drawing in to wet or dry pigment with charcoal and soft pastels on board or canvas. Non-traditional materials of metal and wire are occasionally incorporated. I strive for a contemplative effect through the seemingly contradictory combination of multi-layered color and nervous brushwork. This activity serves to heighten the immediacy of the work and the participation of the viewer. I allow accidents to happen. My art is not "...precise in every part." (Robert Herrick; "Delight in Disorder") The painting evolves, changing as I instinctively adjust relationships of color and form, guided by my longing for beauty.
